New centre to offer IMSI

Tuesday 27 September 2011

Cambridge IVF is to offer — IMSI — as part of its portfolio of treatments. IMSI is a new development, showing promising results in some couples affected by male infertility.

The technique is a development of intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI. During ICSI, eggs are injected with a single sperm, before being incubated in the hope that fertilisation will take place.

IMSI takes this process a step further. Before injection, the sperm are carefully examined under a high magnification microscope. Embryologists are then able to pick those sperm which appear to be the best quality for use during treatment.

Embryologist Stephen Harbottle says, "We are very excited to be offering IMSI at Cambridge IVF. It's a new treatment which we believe will bring benefits to a particular group of patients."
